Drake, 'Nothing Was The Same': Track-By-Track Review

Using data provided directly from the folks at Rap Genius themselves, we've uncovered the most popular lyric (based on views towards the specific lyric) for each of the 15 tracks off the deluxe version of "Nothing Was The Same." Then following each line, we've provided the annotation that explains each lyric according to the Rap Genius community.?

"Tuscan Leather"

[Verse 2]

"Not even talkin' to Nicki, communication is breakin'/ I dropped the ball on some personal shit, I need to embrace it"

According to Rap Genius:

We've always known Drake and fellow label mate Nicki Minaj have had a special connection. They were together on Nicki's track "Moment 4 Life", where they, (in the music video), literally got married. He once rapped, "I love Nicki Minaj/ I told her I'd admit it/ I hope one day we get married just to say we fuckin did it." Since they've both become famous they haven't really talked as much. Nicki recently went on Hot 97 and talked about how Drake and her have become too busy to have a real connection recently.

"Furthest Thing"

[Verse 1]

"Somewhere between psychotic and iconic/ Somewhere between I want it and I got it/ Somewhere between I'm sober and I'm lifted/ Somewhere between a mistress and commitment"

According to Rap Genius:

This is where Drake is currently at: he's walking a fine line between crazy and genius. He's successful, but not totally there yet. He's high, but not too high. He's got a main girl, but he's also got someone on the side. (We already know how he feels about commitment)

There's levels to this shit…

"Started from the Bottom"

[Hook]

"Started from the bottom now we're here/ Started from the bottom now my whole team fuckin' here/ Started from the bottom now we're here/ Started from the bottom now my whole team here, nigga" [2x]

According to Rap Genius:

Drake is adopting the classic story of a rapper who "started from the bottom" and has made it against all odds. He gets a lot of criticism from people saying he already had money prior to rapping, due to his acting career. That isn't the case, however, as Drake only made roughly $20,000 a year. He had to take care of his extremely sick mom and his grandmother and since his father was in and out of prison there was no help.?

"People like to build their own story about my life. I don't know if it makes them feel better, or if it makes it okay for them to not like me, but the last thing I grew up as was rich. I had rich friends, but they weren't giving me their money. I'm just not the type of guy to go 'No, no, no, I'm not rich.' People can say whatever they want about me, though. If they really want to learn them, the facts are out there. But I guess it's easier on their hearts if I didn't have to struggle, and makes it easier to not like me. It is what it is." – Drake on EVR radio

"Wu-Tang Forever"

[Hook]

"Young nigga came through on his Wu-Tang/ And nowadays when I ask about who got it, they say it's yours/ Nobody else's, yeah, this shit belong to nobody, it's yours/ Nobody else's, yeah, this shit belong to nobody, it's yours/ It's yours, it's yours, it's yours that's for sure, that's for sure/ It's yours, it's yours, it's yours that's for sure, that's for sure"??

According to Rap Genius:

Literally though… Drake is coming through on his Wu-Tang, because he borrows "it's yours" from Wu's '97 triumphant hit "It's Yourz"(which was originally sampled from "It's Yours" by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay). Wu's track was more of a motivational call to action, whereas Drizzy is claiming the game and whatever this girl's got to give.

"Own It"

[Verse 1]

"Next time we fuck, I don't wanna fuck, I wanna make love/ Next time we talk, I don't wanna just talk, I wanna trust/ Next time I stand tall I wanna be standin' for you"

According to Rap Genius:

Seems like Drake is done with just "doing it" — he wants something real like a committed relationship.

"Worst Behavior"

[Verse 3]

"Who's hot, who not/ Tell me who rock, who sell out in the stores/ You tell me who flop, who copped the new drop/ Whose jewels got rocks"

According to Rap Genius:

Drake borrows these lines directly from Mase's verse on "Mo' Money Mo' Problems"

Considering how wealthy Drake is (Forbes' #6 top hip Hop earner in 2012) he's got something in common with '96 Ma$e — more money, more problems.

"From Time"

[Hook: Jhene Aiko]

"I love me, I love me enough for the both of us"??

According to recording artist Jhene Aiko:

I love myself enough to know what love actually is … I'm not concerned with you loving me or not…. that has nothing to do with the love I have for you. I am so full of love that i can love you and me… at the same damn time . – Jhene Aiko

"Hold On, We're Going Home"

[Bridge]

"Cause you're a good girl and you know it/ You act so different around me"

According to Rap Genius:

The girl that Drake's talking to only plays coy as a tactic to get guys hooked onto her; but Drizzy's worked out that this is an act, and points out that she acts like she wants him and gives him teasing peeks of her wild side when they're together.

Alternatively, this "good girl" might feel she has to act a certain way around Drake, but he still sees her for what she really is, good. No need to play "bad", he likes her as she is.???

"Connect"

[Hook]

"Swanging, eyes closed just swanging"

According to Rap Genius:

"Swanging" is swerving from side to side in your car. Like much of Drake's style, the term originates in Houston. Also most likely a reference to Trae's "Swang Remix", which is conveniently also sampled in the beat.??

"The Language"

[Verse 1]

"I don't know why they been lying but your shit is not that inspiring"

According to Rap Genius:

Drake doesn't find your art inspiring, and people are just lying/caught up in the hype. This could be a response to Kendrick Lamar on his "Control" verse, where he called out Drake along with many other rappers, saying, "I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you niggas." While Kendrick's verse was seen positively by some for encouraging others to step up their game, Drake doesn't seem to agree with those statements.

"305 to my City"

[Hook: Detail]

"Ooo, 305 to my city"

According to Rap Genius:

305 is the area code to Drake's known city hotspot, Miami, FL.

Drake will fly the girl from Miami (305) to Toronto (his city). But as the verses show Drake doesn't care where she is to begin with, he will still fly her to his city. "If I like her, I just fly her to the city I'm in"

"Too Much"

[Verse 1]

"Done saying, I'm done playing/ Last time was on the outro"

According to Rap Genius:

On the outro to Drake's mixtape, So Far Gone , he and producer 40 joked about not making music anymore:

[Drake]

Are we done??

[40]

I don't know. Are we?

Pops Champagne

Even though this outro was a joke, Drake really is far from retiring from music.

Eminem says something similar on 50 Cent's "Don't Push Me" – "Man I'm done sayin' that I'm done playin'"

"Pound Cake feat. Jay Z / Paris Morton Music 2"

[Verse 3: Jay Z]

"I've done made more millionaires than the lotto did/ Dame made millions, Biggs made millions/ Ye made millions, Just made millions/ Lyor made millions, Cam made millions"??

According to Rap Genius:

Jay's introduced many people to the life of fame and fortune, though they haven't always returned the favor. Even claiming he's made more people millionaires then the lotto does.

Lyor Cohen signed Roc-A-Fella Records during his Def Jam days. "Bigg" here is Kareem Burke who's one of the Roc-A-Fella founders.

"Just" = Just Blaze. As a team member of The Combat Jack Show, I'm just happy that my dude got a BIG shout out from Jay Z. No major annotation, just proud of my dude is all. Ok. Bye now. – Reggie Osse

"Come Thru"

[Verse 2]

"Last night I brought DOA to the studio"

According to Rap Genius:

Drake is referring to the Diamond Of Atlanta gentleman's club. Why go to the strip club when you can bring the strip club to you! If you go to their website, you will hear Drake's "All Me" playing.

"All Me"

[Intro: excerpt from the movie "Funny People"]

"I'm really stepping up my game. These bitches gotta start paying me for this. Can't get no more free Randy."

According to Rap Genius:

This is a line from Raaaaaaaandy, Aziz Ansari's character in the Judd Apatow comedy "Funny People" – "I'm really stepping up my game. These bitches gotta start paying me for this. Can't get no more free Randy. I just fucked that crowd in the ass. Yeah."

As to why he put it in the song? Maybe to emphasize that he just happened to be able to make money off of his widely popular persona, much like Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaandy.

Alternatively, this could be a reference to Drake's music: he's just released a series of free tracks and now that his album is about to come out, folks gotta pay for that music.

This sample along with everything after Big Sean's verse was removed from the album version of the song, possibly stemming from clearance issues.
